"Teach and Train" FCCLA STAR Events-PBL Module

Below is a PBL Module that you may use with the Education and Training Cluster-Teaching Pathway.

Overview/Annotation:   The career cluster of Education and Training prepares learners for careers in planning, managing, providing education and training services and related learning support systems.

  • Computer, internet, PowerPoint Presentation software, LCD projector and screen, Camcorder, Digital Camera, Star Events Manual, Easel(s), Flip Charts, Audio, Portfolios, Props/Pointers, Visual Equipment, 8 ½” x 11” paper, Markers, Pens, Colored Pencils

Activities: 

  • Go to the following Web site, http://fccla.com/assets/files/teach_and_train.pdf, and print out the “Teach and Train” competition packet.
  • Read the rules carefully for the “Teach and Train” competitive event.
  • Study the Rubrics for each part of the competition.
  • Utilize the FCCLA STAR Events “Teach and Train” competition rubric as a checklist when preparing the portfolio, shadow experience, career exploration and self-assessment, presentation, and lesson/workshop plan.
  • Develop a portfolio.  Include in the portfolio a project identification page or slide, FCCLA planning process summary page, career exploration summary, a self-assessment document, evidence of prior presentations, a lesson plan or workshop plan, evidence of technology used, and works cited/bibliography.
  • Participate in a Shadowing experience with a “best practices educator”.
  • Document experience of shadowing and interviewing an educator who is competent and professionally excellent in selected career field.
  • Create an oral presentation that describes the research, career exploration, and lesson/workshop plan in detail.
  • Write a two page career exploration and self-assessment summary using the FCCLA STAR Events “Teach and Train” Career Exploration and Self-Assessment Summary Page.
  • Write a two page reflection on the shadowing experience of a best practices teacher or a corporate trainer.
  • Document evidence of prior presentations, including outcomes.
  • Prepare a lesson/workshop using the FCCLA STAR Events “Teach and Train” Lesson/Workshop Plan format.
  • Present a lesson/workshop.
  • Follow all rules and procedures for the FCCLA STAR Events “Teach and Train” competition.
  • Compete in the FCCLA STAR Events “Teach and Train” competition.

Assessment Strategies (Product-Performance or Problem-Based): 

Portfolio, Oral Presentation, Shadow Experience Paper, Career Exploration and Self-Assessment Summary, Lesson/Workshop Plan, Documentation of Prior Presentations and Outcomes

Credential/Certificate/Award (If applicable):

  • May receive a gold, silver, or bronze metal depending on points scored.
  • A $1000.00 Nasco scholarship may be received by one gold metal winner, after the winner applies and wins the scholarship.
  • A $500.00 Nasco gift certificate will be awarded to the teacher of the student who wins the Nasco scholarship.
