**It would be advised to preview which articles you would like for your students to read and then either print the article or provide them with a direct link to the article.

Education and Training - Rolling Out the New 2010 English Landguage Arts Course of Study

Rolling out the new 2010 English Language Arts Course of Study is in process.  How will this affect the Education and Training program?  It will impact the way you teach your students to develop lessons and/or lesson plans.  The new English Language Arts Reading Literacy Standards will be implemented across all subject areas in the curriculum next year.  It will be required that the literacy standards be integrated into every subject area’s lesson plans and this will include Career and Technical Education too.  This site http://alex.state.al.us/ccrs/ will provide you with more information about this new initiative.  You may also like to check out the Alabama Insight Tools page as well.  It will allow you to gain a better understanding of the new vocabulary and teacher language that will be expected.  You will find the link for the Insight Tools page on the same Web site listed above as well as the new 2010 ELA COS.  Education and Training – Rolling Out the New 2010 English Language Arts Course of Study.

The Reading Like a Historian, Studying the Declaration of Independence, STEM Lesson, and ELA Lesson posts are all connected to the new literacy standards and may help you to understand how they may be seen in each subject area.

Education and Training Teachers:  The Barbie bungee jump and catapult projects are both STEM lessons that use both Science and Math.  These lessons could be used to determine which Math, Science, and Reading Literacy standards have been incorporated.  Keep in mind that learning to read graphs and charts is part of literacy.

The declaration of Independence

Education and Training teachers, this video on teaching the Declaration of Independence is a great example of integrating the ELA COS Appendix D Literacy Standards into a history lesson.

Reading Like a Historian

With the new changes coming next year with the implementation of the new ELA COS and College Readiness Standards (CCRS) for Alabama, the Reading Like a Historian video on the Teacher Channel addresses contextualization.  It demonstrates how to integrate the CCRS Informational Text from the Appendix D section of the ELA COS into the subject matter.  This is a good resource for Education and Training teachers about how to integrate literacy standards when instructing students in the development of a history lesson.
